Letters from Somewhere No.118

Nordhofen Westerwald (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)

The rain surprises us. It begins at the very moment we walk across the already water-soaked meadow and plunge into the forest. It grows stronger the further we go along our usual path. I enjoy the drops falling on my face and the meditatively pattering sound. When I close my eyes, it even sounds as if I were sitting by a campfire.

Before we emerge from the woods again, we take shelter. We find a spot where dense conifers stand close together, so that no rain reaches us anymore, and we watch the spectacle from the dry. There is no wind, and the air is mild. It is quiet, so that we can listen to the pure melody of the rain.

Night approaches, and a fine mist rises, gently settling over the forest canopy. We decide to continue and wander through the dense undergrowth, step by step on the soft ground covered with deep green moss, until we reach the edge of the forest, where we have a clear view of the wide meadows and the distant fields.

As we leave the forest behind, the rain subsides. In the distance, the hills disappear into the spreading mist that merges with the gray sky. In another place, this atmosphere would not be a good influence on my mood. Here, however, I feel free and happy. I enjoy every single step across the wet grass and then the rest of the narrow paved path into the village, to our accommodation, where we immerse ourselves in warmth and comfort.

The walk was beautiful, one of those wonderful experiences I am privileged to have here. I hope that I will remember it later and will connect exactly this kind of experience with the time here. A time and a place that was decisive. From here, the path has opened anew for us.

We are leaving our wandering life and coming to a place we can call our own. So this week comes to an end. A week in which I walked more slowly than usual and yet came far. A week in which I found my way back to myself a little more. As it is, it is perfect. I feel happy again.
