Media in the internet age has gotten creepy. Not just creepy but exploitative. Media on the internet has become all about how to farm engagement via any means possible to increase screen time and ultimately sell more ads. Companies like YouTube (Google) and Facebook do all they can to track you everywhere you go on the web. They feed you content that will keep you on their platform, no matter what that content is or the long term effect it has on the people exposed to it.
This article does a great job of highlighting some of the issues that our modern internet media landscape has created and their causes. There are countless others out there trying to spread the word about how destructive the current environment we find ourselves in is and we should be listening to them. Is our mental health really worth a video platform designed to do nothing except sell us more garbage we don't need? Are our family, friends, and co-worker relationships worth it? What about our society, is that worth it? All of this in the name of consumerism garbage. I don't think it's worth it.
Don't get me wrong, I think the idea behind platforms like YouTube opened up the video format to a whole generation of people that otherwise wouldn't have had access to it. I think that should be celebrated and encouraged. I think there is a better way to have a media platform that doesn't commit the same sins as YouTube and Facebook. A platform that works with creators instead of holding them hostage. A platform that provides enriching experiences for it's users; experiences that aren't centered around extracting their attention for all it's worth and using it to sell them garbage. A platform that uses technology to enhance, not extract.
This is the internet media company I want to bring to the world, I hope to see you there!
