Playing Scared

Life is most meaningful when you're playing scared. No progress, no great joy, no great achievement can be had without some amount of playing scared. Playing scared is an essential part to progress in everything.

In my experience getting used to this feeling has been one of the great gifts of doing extreme sports. These sports often come with a high degree of injury risk that leads to a lot of fear. To do these activities at all you first must learn to play scared. It is one of the best ways that I've found to practice working in the face of this feeling. Even if you're not particularly good at the sport just getting used to identifying when you've started to play scared and to develop techniques around managing that feeling is the important lesson. The more comfortable managing this state you become the more you'll be able to accomplish.

Stepping outside your comfort zone is very cliché but staying within your comfort zone is a death sentence. Life will never just come to you. Anything you want to achieve won't just place itself neatly into your comfort zone. You need to actively expand your comfort zone to encompass the things you want to achieve.

Do something scary today.
