Some reflections

In 10 days my official working life begins. Hence, I have taken the last month very easily and tried to focus on recovering after a pretty intense year. It mostly translated into doing a lot of sports and trying to spend some time with people I care about.

More specifically, I have trained for and successfully completed a climb on Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Straight after that, I have started a big training block for my first ever marathon, which is (hopefully) taking place this October in Liverpool. A lot of my thoughts have been focus on endurance racing, so maybe I will soon write some "emails" about interesting bits and pieces I've discovered.

Settling back into a rhythm more resembling my normal routine, I will get back to writing here about whatever crosses my mind which I find stimulating or noteworthy.

Here are some ideas, which I will develop further in my next emails:

1. Leadership is hard and rarely "sexy" - After leading the UCL Investment Society for a (truly unusual and challenging) year, my idea of leadership ability developed in a multitude of directions. A recent episode of Lex Friedman's podcast, where the topic was discussed with retired military man Jocko Willink, made me go through some of the lessons learned again - and added some colour / structure to my thinking.

2. Changing life perspectives - Graduating university has been a rather anti-climatic experience, causing few moments of joy or reflection. However, it so happens that it corresponds to a period where some of my strong-held beliefs about life and my future plans seem to be changing. This is both exciting and scary.

3. "Easy" is a big word in sports - Another idea referenced in passing by Lex in the podcast was the need to elite BJJ fighters to practice their craft in a way which feels "easy". While I have no idea about BJJ, it was immediately obvious that the concept applies to running and most (if not all) other sports. It might be what separates the best from the second-best.

More to come..
