My fellow Denverites,
As we approach the mayoral election, it is crucial that we consider the issue of homelessness and its impact on our city. It is not just a problem for the homeless, but for all of us. We must elect a candidate who is truly committed to solving this complex problem with specific, creative, and feasible policies.
Homelessness is not just a lack of housing, but a symptom of deeper societal issues such as mental illness, addiction, and poverty. It is a crisis that requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses not only immediate needs, but also long-term solutions.
We need a mayor who understands that providing housing and services to the homeless is not just a moral obligation, but also an economic imperative. When people are housed and receive the support they need, they are more likely to engage in the workforce and contribute to the city’s economy.
We also need a mayor who will mobilize the community with discipline and compassion. This means engaging with homeless advocates, service providers, business leaders, and neighborhood organizations to develop and implement effective policies. It also means recognizing that the homeless are members of our community, and treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Furthermore, the next mayor must have the keen understanding that the person passed out on the floor in Union Station could be someone’s son, brother, or best friend. This human connection is essential in addressing homelessness with the empathy and compassion it requires.
We cannot continue to ignore the issue of homelessness in our city. It is time for a mayor who is truly committed to solving this complex problem with specific, creative, and feasible policies. Let’s elect a leader who will mobilize our community and treat the homeless with the dignity and respect they deserve.
