Day 23, Austin, TX

I did a bit of sightseeing in Texas today. I tried to get some donuts at a place with a decent Yelp review, but when I got there, they were closed for vacation. I went past what I could see from the road of the Fort Worth Water Gardens, which were shown in Logan's Run.

I went to Dallas to visit Dealey Plaza. They had nice historic markers up about the JFK assassination, and there were a couple folks sharing information that wasn't included in the official record. None looked like Oliver Stone and Jim Garrison is dead.

I stopped at a Mammoth fossil site in Waco, and it was cool to see a working dig area.

They even had a Dire Wolf skull; some were found in Dallas and Austin, but not in the middle, in Waco. I guess that’s a Game of Thrones thing now but it was something different before.

I also stopped at a more famous site in Waco. No, not that one (although it's possible that the Branch Davidian compound may have been open)—the original Dr. Pepper factory. Side note: the 2018 miniseries, Waco, was excellent and had a lot of information that I wasn't aware of back in 1993. I'm not sure if it's available online currently.

On my way to dinner, I was excited to see signage for a Buc-ee’s. I have seen articles comparing them to Wawa (part of a series that also compared Wawa to Sheetz), so I was curious about it. The one I stopped at was massive… the store seemed like the size of an IGA and there were more gas pumps than I could fit in the frame (note: two rows of banks), and all this with signs that said “no 18 wheelers”).

After that, I headed past Austin to Lockhart, trying to suss out the barbecue situation based on a Roadfood article. Unfortunately, I got to Smitty's Market around 6:15; they closed at 6. I opted out of Kreuz Market because of the harsh review comments left behind, so I ended up at Black's Barbecue, and I was more than happy with what I ate.
