Day 3: 2022-09-12: Minneapolis to Omaha

Continuing my discussion of Minnesota, on the way out of town, I tried to stop at a donut store. It wasn’t open, but on the way to/from it, I ended up near some pretty green space near a train yard and the river. It was pretty astonishing to me that it was still used like that!

I took a recreational ride through Iowa. I found some interesting food… a Maid-Rite sandwich:

It met the server’s description: like a Sloppy Joe without the sauce. Not exactly my thing, but I like to try local things. I wasn’t the only Ohioan to visit recently, based on this visitor chalkboard message:

I also stopped for a breaded pork tenderloin, which was tasty, but didn’t fill a plate like some can:

I also found some cool vehicle-related art:

As I went through Iowa, I was pretty surprised: for some reason, I’d supposed that the terrain would be pretty flat, like the parts of Indiana and Ohio where I grew up. It was a lot more hilly, though. I liked seeing the fields full of corn (and some that seemed to be wildflowers), some with what looked like terraced levels.

I was in a valley when the fat sun dropped out of sight. Although there wasn’t a lake around, it reminded me of when Brian used to tease his goddaughter about the sun setting into Conesus Lake with a hiss, like water into the fire. Fun times!

By the time I made it into Omaha, it was getting late, so I didn’t have much chance for exploring, but I really enjoyed the lighting on the (Council Bluffs, IA) Broadway viaduct.
