Day 6: 2022-09-15: Hot Springs to Houston

My Hot Springs motel was a cute 1950s? era motel that had been updated. They had a couple campers in back (one was used for storage) and some cats that ran the grounds. The room was fine for one but would have been snug for two, and there wasn’t much counter space and no closet. Modern design!

I walked back into town for some breakfast and to do a quick tour of the National Park bathhouse museum. It amazes me how Hot Springs drew so many from around the country, especially before rail travel was possible there—it can’t have been easy just to get there—and they reported that folks frequently stayed for a week or more in the hopes of all kinds of ailments being cured. I’m thankful for modern medicine and science!

After this, there wasn’t much else to do but head down to Houston for the Astros game. Their ballpark is one of the modern convertible styles, but there was an ozone warning and maybe even a sprinkle or two, so the roof was closed.

The best part of the game was when an Astro hit a home run. They have a man drive an 1860s replica train high above the field. I think this may have been the most crowded indoor game I saw, and I wasn’t a fan of maneuvering through so many!

My motel ended up not being what I hoped for. When I booked it, I was excited that it was cheap and even more that it had a party vibe. What this ended up being was: pool closed at 9 and dance club music played until midnight or so (which didn’t bother me and I picked a poolside room). I’m not sure if this was because I stayed on a weeknight? I still give the hotelier credit: it seems like they picked up an old Motel 6 or similar, made it more interesting, added a lounge, and called it a lifestyle hotel. I loved the lobby decor and how they had old novelty room decor!
