I have this basic quandary about names of industry position roles. Wonder if anyone else thought about this. I know data science has been going through dynamic changes last decade, but my specific thought is that "science" is typically "lets run experiments to discover what reality is , updating our conceptual epistemological models as we go along."
So a materials science expands the frontier of what stuff manufacturing can use to make stuff. Before it was plastics, now it is using less plastics since they are harmful.
Clinical, biological and medical science experiments on life helps us understand hey there's a new organ called the interstitium.
And drug science, is about finding new compounds useful for medicine , statistically validating the effect.
Computer science is an interesting one. It is understanding information theory and how ultimately virtual processes can take on a life of their own not unlike biological processes. And the past several decades have attempted to mimic brains' learning processes, digging into how information is compressed. This category is fuzzy to be sure.
Data science is maybe a subset of computer science. Not sure yet, but my position here is that it seems to be often a "local search for answers" say at a company, as opposed to adding to world knowledge. This is to say, yes science is sometimes used only for personal gain but in particular, folks who play "data science" roles at companies very often do not get to also enrich the collective world knowledge. This makes the use of the term "science" seem adulterated and abused. Maybe corporate roles are more fitting as "data mercenaries" not "data scientists "? 😆
