I'm writing this newsletter from my email client. It's called Hey. It's made by the folks over at Basecamp. I've been using it for a month now. It's a bit of a learning curve but it's been interesting to experience email in different ways. Here's what I love about it:

It's private and secure. There's no trackers and the parent company is not trying to sell my information to sell more ads. They are not an Ad base business and the founders are vocal about how they want build products. It aligns with how I've been thinking about the internet.

It's designed to reduce emails. My personal email over the last 10 years is 99% newsletters and spam and 1% friends and on going projects. Hey lets me separate these emails. I can send all my newsletters into a feed type view where I can read it when I want to and not worry about them.

It's paid. Yes I have to pay $99 per year for this service. I'm happy to pay that price for zero ads and secure email. I'm saving time and stress. I'm also buying less because the ads I get now on the internet are a lot less targeted.

It's new. The two main players for email are Gmail and Outlook. They are both 20+ years old it's become very hard for them to innovate. I'm excited to be an early user of Hey and help shape it into a tool I'll use for a long time.

It's hard. Switching emails is hard. Like really hard. I still can't close my Gmail because a lot of people only know that address and many services are connected to that email. It's like switching phone number but it's attached to the service. Imagine if you had to switch phone number every time you switched providers. Email clients have designed a monopoly system. For now I FWD all my Gmail to Hey and it's working.

I'll keep sharing on this. I just finished reading "A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload" and Cal Newport goes deep on the research of how email and now Slack (any messaging platforms) are created to make use hooked. From the book:

"Any workflow that requires you to constantly tend conversations unfolding in an inbox or chat channel is going to diminish the quality of your brain’s output. I also argued that communication overload—the feeling that you can never keep up with all the different incoming requests for your time and attention—conflicts with our ancient social wiring, leading to unhappiness in the short term and burnout in the long term."

I'm sure you can relate. Here's what I'm trying:

Check at set times. I check my emails in the morning and in the evening. I've stopped refreshing the app every time I'm bored.

Say it later. If I have something to say to someone I draft and add more before I send short messages. Communicating at work like you text just keeps you busy.

I'm trying Trello. When emails come in with a request I add it to my personal board and stop thinking about the email. I focus on getting the action done.

Async video. I send updates via async video with services like Loom. This avoids meetings where time is wasted on small talk.

This new way of working is here to stay. There's a whole generation who's going to be remote first. In this shift, new ways of working will be established. The amount of digital communication is exploding and we (humans) cannot handle all of it.

I'd love to hear from you if you've tried different processes. What's worked and what hasn't?

Cheers,
Miles
✌️

--
Get my Newsletter
milesfitzgerald.com

I’ll start with a quick update on how the leaving Twitter and Instagram experiment is going. It’s been awesome. I enjoy being able to still access web links if someone sends me something to check out. While I’m working, I find that I've been more focused and I’m actually calling friends to have long conversations. The biggest change has been the reduction of things I want to buy because of the ads. I’m actually saving money.

Yet I realize social media is the tip of the iceberg. Sure, the unlimited feed and constant tracking is bad, but what I’m starting to look at now is my internet usage. And that starts with the browser and my search engine. So I made a couple tweaks last week. I am now using Brave to browse. It’s fast and private. I’ve also defaulted to using DuckDuckGo as my primary search engine.

What I found on these two companies from Wikipedia.

“A February 2020 research report published by the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin tested a number of browsers and found Brave to be the most private of them, in terms of phoning home: "In the first (most private) group lies Brave, in the second Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and in the third (least private) group lie Edge and Yandex.]”

“DuckDuckGo's as of February 2021, it had 98,788,333 daily searches on average. DuckDuckGo positions itself as a search engine that puts privacy first and as such it does not store IP addresses, does not log user information, and uses cookies only when required.”

What’s the point?

The point is that you are the product. Google tracks everything you’ve ever done on Google but also on every service they own. Here’s a list to remind ourselves. Google photos, maps, Gmail, Android OS, Suite, Google sign and many more.

“Google uses your personal profile to sell ads, not only on their search engine, but also on over three million other websites and apps. Every time you visit one of these sites or apps, Google is following you around with hyper-targeted ads. It’s exploitative. By allowing Google to collect all this info, you are allowing hundreds of thousands of advertisers to bid on serving you ads based on your sensitive personal data. Everyone involved is profiting from your information, except you. You are the product.” - Article

How do I stop using Google?

I’ll start by saying. I’m only at step 1. I have a new browser and search engine. I’m still writing this newsletter in Google Docs and replying to you via my personal Gmail email. I’ve downloaded all my Google data but there is so much. I don’t even know where to start.

I was reading this article “How to remove Google”. It made me think I’m at the same spot I was when I decided to stop downloading movies and music from the internet for free. I am now ready to pay for services so that I don’t have to pay with my data. There are a lot of options to replace your Google services. I’ll start trying them out and report back.

I’m currently looking at my email since it powers all my access. It’s our digital identity in many ways. A new email service called Hey launched a few months back and I want to see if it can replace my Gmail.

“HEY is an alternative for those who care about their email, their privacy, their personal data, their time, their attention, and control over the way they communicate.” - Jason Fried

That sentence resonated with this journey I’m on. Let’s see...

That’s it for this week. If you’ve tried to Un-Google yourself, I’d love to hear about your experience. Hit reply and say hi.

5 Things I’ve Enjoyed

Starlink - This keeps coming back up. Starlink is a satellite dish you can install anywhere and get fast speed internet. It’s made by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company. With remote work becoming the norm and rural areas still trying to catch up with high speed infrastructure, I can see this becoming an amazing way to set up anywhere in the world. Now Elon needs to fix time zones for us.

OMG - On the work-from-home topic. My friend Benedikt wrote this article about his experience and how to get set up. It’s a good one to go back to.

Time Tracker - This is a small app that lives in your toolbar. I’ve been using it to track time when I start a new task. Sometimes I time box myself but other times it helps me be aware. I’m 1h and 14 minutes into writing this newsletter.

Communication at Basecamp - I’ve been interested in Basecamp and the founders. They wrote a manifesto on how they communicate . This is my favorite one: “Now is often the wrong time to say what popped in your head. It’s better to let it filter it through the sieve of time. What’s left is the part worth saying.” What would your company manifesto sound like? “A 1h meeting with 37 people is our default” :)

Toyata Woven City - I was talking to my friend Day this week. He’s on the road traveling with his dog and working from wherever the wind brings him. We started talking about the future of cities and how villages will have a larger role in the future of work/life. That video from Toyota is a fun glimpse into the future. Cities are ready for innovation.

Photo

Last year when Covid hit and my gym closed down, I started looking for ways to work out at home (with everyone else in the country).

I was dealing with a knee injury from running a marathon, and overwhelmed by the amount of programs out there. From Peloton to Instagram fitness, the whole industry is hard to navigate. I tried a few zoom classes but they never did it for me.

My friend Greg pointed me to coach Gunther who ended up becoming my virtual trainer. He’s been patient and teaching me the fundamentals of maintaining my body for the long run.

Disclaimer: What I’m about to share is based on my experience learning from google and especially from Gunther, who’s guided me to find a system that works for me. Hit me up if you have any questions but also feel free to try different things. Make it your own.

It’s a lab for your body

“The modern gym should be considered a human performance lab. The gym/lab is a controlled environment in which you can safely layer skill progression while addressing range-of-motion issues.” - Kelly Starrett

That quote resonated with me. My goal is not to look like Arnold but more to find a training routine that will enable me to do the things I love in life. Avoid injuries and have a good time 🎉. Yet I was following online classes where I wasn’t learning much about movement but simply following an instructor and series I didn’t understand.

With Gunther's mentorship I’ve been able to start a new journey. One where I have a lab 😅 (my home gym) and a coach helping me try different experiments. I want to share the tools I’ve been using in the process and bust some myths that kept me from starting in the past.

72" inches x 48"

You don’t need a lot of space - 72" inches x 48" is the size of my mat. It's large enough to do everything I need. You can even start with no mat, and if you have an outdoor space even better. The important part is for you to dedicate a space in your home where every morning you can sync with yourself and find all your gear. That’s it!

Search and Destroy

Understand your current limitations - There is no overnight success. I needed to handle my knee injury before anything. So we started working on mobility and strengthening my core via movements. I learned about Search (find the areas around where it hurts) and Destroy (via rolling and mobility). I used my foam roller and my lacrosse ball around my knee and finally found that my knee was hurting because my tibia muscle was so tight. The foam roller and lacrosse ball should be part of your setup.

The 7 Basic Movements

You don’t need to make it complicated - You don’t need a professional gym to get started.

What I’ve been focusing on is getting better at these 7 basic movements.

Hinge

Squat

Lunge

Push

Pull

Twist

Gait/Carry

To improve your push ups, pull ups, squats, and sit ups, you only need a few tools. A pull-up bar or rings (for pulling motion), and a couple kettle bells (to hinge/squat) to help you go deeper in certain movements, and finally some bands to add some resistance down the line. All of this fits in any apartment and can be stored away really easily. You are looking at under $200 investment for your home gym.

But a lab is not complete unless you can track progress. This white board helps me with my daily workouts and notes.

So I did a couple things this week. First I downloaded all my data from Instagram. The archive file they send you is a raw file of everything they’ve collected on you. It’s scary…

Second, I deleted my Instagram account. That takes up to 30 days to fully come to action. I can still see public posts via their web app, but it will be interesting to see how my digital consumption evolves in the upcoming months. ✌️

This week while I was walking on my daily walk around the neighborhood. This Mitsubishi Montero caught my eye. I love the compact feel and that brown/beige color. It reminds me of some of those Japanese Kei 4x4 I loved seeing on our last trip there. I had to see what they were going for and it’s not bad…

And yes, it’s been snowing in New York. The best part of snow in NY (at least for me) is not having to move our car for street cleaning. Here’s something on parking design in New York. I love these types of projects.

Say hi 👋

Anything for mobility or home gyms you've experimented with recently? I would love to hear from you.
Last week I shared Part 1 of how I’ve been designing my wellness system. A way for me to stay healthy and have regular check-ins with myself. I use a mix of qualitative and quantitative data to analyze different factors. This week I want to share some of my quantitative data experiments. I would also love to hear from you if some of this resonates.

Disclaimer: While you read this, take it with a grain of salt. I’m not saying this is the “right” way to do it. But I believe that data is still at the genesis for the health industry. Knowing that privacy and AI in that space will be controversial…

Data is King/Queen

I want to share a few experiments I’ve done and how they impacted my health:

Sleep — I started tracking my sleep with Whoop (a sports band) and realized a few things. I was getting 5 to 6 hours of sleep per night, and alcohol (even just wine) was having a big impact on my sleep quality. Whoop was able to show me how inconsistent my sleep was. I tried a bunch of things to fix my sleep once the data was clear. So far removing alcohol at night is the single best way for me to have a good night sleep.

Weight — Tracking my weight overtime has been super rewarding. Seeing the chart drop, stabilize or go up is a wonderful feeling. It gives you a great indicator that you are on track. Whatever your goals are. I love using my Withings smart scale for that. I just need to stand (every other day) on it and let the app track over time. I will look at the chart on a weekly basis and make adjustments if needed.

Glucose monitoring — I’ve always had a sweet tooth and always understood sugar in excess was bad for me, but I never realized how much effect glucose could have on my mood and energy levels until I started seeing the data. I started hearing about new ways to track sugar level with CGM (continuous glucose monitor) systems that were on your body 24/7. I wore one for 14 days and looked at how each meal was having an effect on my overall energy with the help of my nutritionist. That live data loop helped me make some major changes in my nutrition far beyond just removing sweet stuff. I highly recommend trying this. Everyone reacts to glucose differently.

Macros — I started using a scale (I love this OXO one) to weigh my food and my FitnessPal to understand the impact of what I was eating. The data hit me hard. I was eating too many carbs and was lacking protein. Shifting my nutrition to a healthier macro ratio has been a journey, and the data is the only way for me to know. This is a time consuming way to get data since you have to enter everything manually. I’m excited for better tech in this space.

Water — We know water is important to us. I started tracking (by hand) how much water I was actually drinking and the data was all over the place. When I realized I needed to hit 1 gallon per day, I did some digging around tracking water data. All the tech options are flimsy at best. But I understood I needed to see what a gallon actually looked like. So I got one of these big water bottles. All I need to do is drink 1 a day to hit my water intake. I’ve shifted to this Miir bottle so my water stays cool all day. I haven’t been able to track a direct correlation between hitting my water intake and anything positive apart for more trips to the restroom. I need to do some more research on this.

As you can see there’s a lot of ways of tracking for your health and habits. And these are just a few of my experiments. What I've learned is to be consistent with how I track, and I understand there is no one perfect way to track the same thing. Quantitative data is great but it needs to be paired with regular check-in with yourself. I just use a notebook and a pen to keep track of the qualitative part. I wish there was a dashboard that could bring all of this together. All the data and your personal notes in one place…

9 Things I’ve Enjoyed

MiiR Pourigami - The perfect travel pour over coffee dripper. Very sturdy, very compact and very easy to use. I bring this on my trips now. No more shitty coffee in hotel rooms. No more waiting for breakfast hours. All you need is a way to boil water.

MiiR Camp Cup - I bring this mug on my trips and use it everyday at home for my coffee. Perfect size mug and handle. Well designed, easy to use, comfortable lid. Keeps your coffee warm for ~2hours. No app. No Wifi. Buy once and keep for life.

Jarvis Mounting Arm - A friend came by my home office this week and was asking questions about my new monitor arm. I picked it because it gives the best sitting distance between my eyes and my monitor, plus I can use it to stand up for video calls without having to adjust my desk. It’s also clean looking (everything else on the market has an outdated design).

Kodak Film Camera - Took these on a trip recently. They are super fun to have around and shoot candid moments. The film looks great and having to wait to see your full roll is a great moment to reflect on once you get your pictures back.

Gymnastic Rings - I just got these rings for outdoor workouts. I’m working on my upper body strength. If you use these, I would love to hear from you. It’s opening up a new Youtube world for me. :P

Nose Bridge Strips - I wear optical glasses so the last year wearing a mask has been foggy. I’m excited to try these and hopefully fix my fog look. If you wear glasses and you’ve managed to fix your fog + mask issue. Please share.

Readng - Is a new platform to share books and reviews. GoodReads interface is not cutting anymore and Amazon doesn’t seem to be investing in the platform. I’m excited to try this new way of sharing my library.

Bedrock Sandals - I’ve been reading a lot about active mobility. Working your body not for the looks but for the movements. Helping you move better in life. I’ll need to write on that subject soon. But one thing that is clear is the importance of your feet in your overall core stability. The barefoot movement is intriguing but wearing these type of shoes never cut it for me. I just got these sandals (“freedom footwear”) for warmer weather hikes. I’ll report back soon…

Athletic Greens - It’s actually really hard to eat the recommended amount of greens recommended by nutritionists. I’ve been trying this supplement to support my veggie intake. And I’m still eating greens for the fiber part. It’s done wonder on my digestion and the quality of each ingredient is top notch. I can see this being super handy when I travel in parts of the world where greens are hard to get.

Say hi 👋

Anything data wise you've experimented with recently?
I want to share some of the experiments I’ve been exploring for overall wellbeing. Just like you, my journey in health is full of ups and downs. With more questions than answers.

While you read this, take everything with a grain of salt. I’m not saying this is the “right” way to do it. But I believe that sharing this information is important.

Designing my system

For the longest time, my understanding of my health looked something like this: see doctor once a year. The doctor would say you need more Vitamin D (I live in New York). And that’s it. There was no follow up. I was leaving 300-ish days in between any kind of checkup.

All that changed when I discovered a startup called Parsley health. A new kind of health approach, based on holistic medicine instead of reactive medicine.

Parsley starts with an hour introduction call with your doctor and coach, where they ask you questions around your current lifestyle. How often do you drink alcohol, how many hours do you sleep, how much exercise do you get each week, what kind of foods do you eat etc… They also take a deeper look at your blood test and see if they want to go more in depth.

Once your doctor gets the data — Quantitative (eg: your missing vitamin X) and qualitative (eg: I’m stressed and thus I don’t sleep well) — they will prescribe alternatives to get you back on track.

Changing any habit in your life is hard. This is where the magic of the service comes into play. You meet with your doctor every 3/6 months and you have unlimited communication with them. At each visit, they go go over the plan and help you rectify if you haven’t nailed it yet.

The Wellness Loop

I now follow this loop to make sure I’m on track for anything related to overall wellness.

The doctor helps me identify what can be improved

I start implementing

Track Data (Quant and Qual)

Share that data and progress with my coach/doctor

Start seeing progress and feel better

You can learn a lot by following the wellness loop during 1 year. You don’t need to be paying these high fees for the rest of your life. I’m happy to answer any questions if you are thinking of trying it.

8 Things that I’ve enjoyed this week:

The Good Gut - This book made me realize the importance of my gut health and how much impact it can have on energy levels.

Why We Sleep - This book goes in depth on why we sleep and how much impact it can have on us if we don’t get enough of it.
I've been thinking more about different ways to slow down in my life. In this issue, I want to share a few ideas and things that have helped me on this new journey.

Quitting Twitter 🔊

2020 was the year where social media exploded.

“Thanks” to we know who, it's taken such a heavy place for news and media. I remember back in 2010 when I moved to New York. Instagram had just launched (on mobile) and Twitter was nerdy and small.
I used both of the new platforms to meet people in real life. It was open and exciting. The noise could be turned into real life experiences. I still think corners of these platforms are healthy but most of it has turned into noise.

I started thinking about ways to remove myself from the chaos. I tried disabling for a week, but I was always pulled back in. I also was having a hard time with the idea of losing the clout I had built over the years.

I think I've landed on something that works for me so far. I'm keeping my Twitter and Instagram open, but I'm unfollowing everyone (slowly but surely). If I unfollow you, don’t take it personally. It’s me, not you. My feed is empty. The noise is muted. Yet I can still publish content if I need to.

This newsletter and my website are a way to keep sharing and connecting with friends by creating slow content. More thoughtful. More personal. I hope you enjoy it.

Here’s two articles I recommend reading on this subject:

- The Rise of Slow Feeds, an article about how this slow feed movement is gaining momentum.

- How to delete all your content from Twitter. This is what I used to guide me. It’s actually ~ complicated to remove all your data.

Links 🔗

Social Media is one thing but here’s a few other ideas I’ve loved using to slow down in my life.

- Wabi-Sabi for Artists. Wabi Sabi is a term that comes from two Japanese words mashed together and it is rarely defined, indeed it kind of avoids being defined. The author says Japanese people know the feeling but not the definition. A short read that made me think differently about design and nature. 🇯🇵

- Stendig Calendar. Created by legendary Italian designer Massimo Vignelli in 1966, the Stendig remains one of the best examples of 1960s modernist design, featuring two of the movement’s most iconic creations - Swiss typeface Helvetica and the Grid. I buy mine each year and I really enjoy tearing pages off up each month. I recycle the paper for gift wrapping. 🎁

- Post-it Flex. A whiteboard you stick on your wall. I’ve been using this for a year now. When I’m dealing with something complex or simply need to remember a todo. It’s always there and easy to clean up. I keep it in my office. ✏️

- Mainichi-Koh Sandalwood Incense. Literally translated from the Japanese, Mainichi-Koh means “Incense for everyday”. They are inexpensive to use. It’s a great way to start a new idea or simply your day. 🌊

Photos 📸

Removing myself from social platforms means looking at different ways to share photos. I’m experimenting with adding them to my website. I’ve been walking to get out of the house and taking my film camera to shoot a few shots on each stroll.

Say hi 👋

Anything you've done to slow down lately?

There is a jazz club in New York. It's down some narrow stairs. It's called Smalls. The place is small but the crowd is large.

You get there, the band is already playing. You sit down or order at the bar. You can tell people here are serious about their jazz. It’s dark; it smells. The piano is always at the same spot. You get a glass of red or a cocktail and you start letting the jazz transport you.

There are many jazz clubs in New York but this one is special. It’s made for jazz people. It’s not trying to be anything else. I miss it and it reminds me of a way of life. If you do things for long enough like Smalls without any excuses it becomes cool. It becomes you. 🎷
