Pixel Perfect Picks #136 - Project Hail Mary, Evolution of Craft, Fred again

Hey there 👋

Welcome to this installment of Pixel Perfect Picks. Here I'm sharing something that I heard, read, and saw. You can subscribe to this newsletter here. I'm additionally publishing a more extended essay about software development, design, and freelancing every month.

Saw Something

I don't go to the cinema that often anymore. But when I do, I want it to count. Last week I sat down for Project Hail Mary, and I have to say: it absolutely delivered. I've been a fan of the book for a while — Andy Weir really, really knows how to make science feel like the most thrilling thing in the world — and the film captures that spirit completely. If you haven't already, clear your evening and go watch it. No spoilers from me.

Read Something

I've been reading a lot about what AI actually does to creative work. Not the hot takes, but the more considered ones. Carl's piece The Evolution of Craft is one of the most honest I've come across recently. The argument is essentially that we're shifting from people who do the work to people who define what the work should be. "Intent Architects," he calls it. It's a short read, but I've been thinking about it since.

Heard Something

Fred again is already one of my all-time favorites, and I've shared his music here before. But last week something special happened: he played Alexandra Palace in London together with Thomas Bangalter  and the whole set is available on YouTube right now. Absolutely worth it.
