📺 Highlights from my trip to Tech.EU summit 2023 in Brussels.

A little over two weeks ago, I was a guest at the Tech.eu summit in Brussels. Beer, chocolate, fries with mayo, and ancient buildings, check check, check and check - but there was more to my visit.

It had been a while since I attended any startup/tech conference and two things stood out for me:

First, I was really pleased to see great diversity on the stages, and second there was a lot of content that resonates with using business to make the world a better place. There was actually too much interesting stuff for me to see it all.

Now the videos are online, I've picked a few that I enjoyed to share with you:

Space Tech: Europe's role in the next-level Space Race hosted by Dan Taylor
I watched this panel because (along with quantum computing) it's a topic I know very little about. I was surprised to hear that both the guest's companies had focus on sustainability and space, but in very different ways.

Charting a way forward for Ethical AI: Balancing innovation and responsibility hosted by David Meyer
I've been fascinated by the explosion of AI over the past 18 months, so it was good to hear some conversation that focussed both on the need for regulation, but also the need to create safe space for experimenting with AI to achieve positively impactful outcomes.

Nuclear 2.0: How startups are building a sustainable nuclear future hosted by Cate Lawrence
Nuclear Energy is a phrase that triggers weird feelings for a lot of people, but the new types of nuclear energy might just be essential for us humans getting to a point where we don't need to burn fossil fuels to thrive on mothership Earth. Lots of interesting points discussed on this panel.

Sustainability at the source: A new era for European VCs hosted by Joanna Kirk
Whilst I believe that every company must take the responsibility for doing good, it really is a team sport. Especially for Startups and Scale-ups that have investors. Without investor support (or even, mandate) it's going to be very hard. I was pleased to hear this panel discussing how investors are focussing on sustainability both up- and down-stream of their money.

Access Denied: The high stakes fight for a level playing field in Europe and beyond hosted by Fiona Alston
This one was a little frustrating to hear. Not because the conversation wasn't good, but because of the message it sends. Too many players in the Startup and Investing world are still seeing diversity as an initiative and not imperative. This, despite the data that diverse companies perform better.

Calm companies, small teams, big outcomes: How business can (also) work hosted by Robin Wauters
Robin's guest David Heinemeier Hansson (aka DHH) is an exception in the startup and tech world. It was refreshing to hear him giving an alternative perspective, that startups should not take VC investment and go for "growth at all costs".

Next up, Pirate Summit, the last burn, in just a few weeks time.
This is going to be a great way to kick off the summer. I hope to see you there :)
