Ciao Gente di Festa,
(That's "hi party people" in Italian -- tuck that useful phrase away for a rainy day!)
I'm back with a request and an "update" in this edition.
First, it's time for us to make our final payment to our lawyer in Italy! This is our last major expense before the ruling and the second-to-last shared expense overall. I need to send our final payment of €1000, plus a little extra in transaction fees, to our lawyer in Italy. I will update the spreadsheet of expenses (which you can find here) and message each one/group of you to let you know what I need to to send my way. You can expect those emails tomorrow.
(Regarding that actual last expense -- we will need to pay a fee to the Italian government to transcribe the ruling of our court case. The fee right now is €600 total, and we won't need to pay that until after we win our case. Speaking of our case...)
Second, a little update on our case.
Here's the short version: we have been assigned a judge, but we are still waiting on a court date. We are waiting longer that I would have expected. I don't know when to expect a court date, but I check on it a few times a week, and I will let you all know as soon as there are any updates.
As for the longer version... We were assigned a judge named Adele Pezone back in March. Historically, she has been great as scheduling cases quickly, with relatively short waits to have cases heard. Unfortunately, since mid-February, nobody filing cases like ours in Italy has been assigned a court date, as far as we can tell. This is not just with our judge but with the whole group of judges that hear immigration and citizenship cases.
I mentioned in a previous edition (in Newsletter #46, sent back on November 27, 2021) that there was a change up in how these cases are handled. Cases filed after late June 2022 would be heard in regional courts instead of the court in Rome. Because we filed in March, we filed in Rome. It appears that at least some of those who have filed in those regional courts after the switch in late June have been assigned court dates already. Some are speculating that the court in Rome is going do something to expedite hearing the cases like ours that are still pending. This is not based on anything concrete or any announcements, just speculation from some of the attorneys that file these cases.
I check the app for our case statusseven days a week a few times a week, and I will let you know as soon as I hear about a court date, judge reassignment, expediting of cases, etc. With tomorrow being August 1, and most of Italy taking some or all of August off for Ferragosto, I don't anticipate anything changing very soon.
Check your inboxes for a follow up message from me tomorrow, and I will see many of you tonight at Ooma's.
Con Abbracci,
Noah
