Note to self | lessons #3

  • When you graduate you are not 'know it all'
  • When you retire you are not 'going to die'
  • When you are young you are not 'invincible'
  • Don't hold on too tightly, you are hurting the other person
  • Problem solving does not start from the impossible, it may eventually sort that
  • Solve problems for impact... problems for fame will often lead to a personal dead end
  • Between being the most intelligent person in the room, and the quiet one - go for being the second - that is the intelligent thing to do!
  • When the 'top voice' is the only voice in the room, you should be concerned
  • Communications: they may connect to you but do they appeal to the segment?
  • Great ideas are wasted upon an 'all-knowing' group. Log-out
  • Your plans will often need many other things to fall in place. Keep at it
  • Governing Question: what next? | Grounding Question: Am I Home?
  • There is a reason why the chain of command works in the army. Each one is clear about the reporting and submitting ecosystem. Each one is capable of, and training to step up or down in crisis
  • The structure is necessary no matter how equal or democratic they may be - as the responsibility rests with One Person - and not someone or everyone
  • You need tie breakers once in a while: go for them
  • Even to fly solo, someone would've built the runway
  • Someone once told me as a journalist, to write a hundred words, you must at least read a thousand
  • Read with interest, write like there is no tomorrow, edit with a structure. Repeat.
  • Hard story: break the story in the first line, follow with data, add background
  • Human story: colour, quotes, background
  • Back up data and research information - you never know when you'll need it
  • Even the smallest reference to an article you may have written, take a screenshot - back it up
  • Savour travel. A lot of time has been wasted taking photos. Savour the presence.
  • It is great to get back to albums. After 11,400 photos taken over 10 years, I realise I don't need most of them... imagine the time I must have spent 'organising clutter'
