Who’s the Phillip in your life?

I know a man called Phillip.

He must be in his eighties. I say “must be” because I’ve never actually asked him for the number. It feels irrelevant, like asking a river its depth when you’re already swimming in it.

What I know instead: He has the strength and spirit of a thirty‑year‑old. Not the reckless energy of youth, but the earned, quiet power of someone who has refused to let his body tell his mind what’s possible.

Phillip is wise. Not the kind of wise that lectures. The kind that listens, then asks one question that undoes your knot of thinking. And he’s agile – physically and intellectually. I’ve seen him push himself on a morning walk that would leave me breathless, then sit down and argue the finer points of political philosophy over tea.

He reads. He moves. He challenges himself. Not because he’s trying to prove anything to anyone. Because that’s simply who he is.

Here’s what I’ve learned from Phillip:

The number on your birth certificate is a fact. But it is not a verdict.

We are so used to equating age with decline that we forget – some people run the other direction. Their spirit doesn’t follow the calendar. The calendar follows them.

Phillip isn’t inspiring because he’s eighty. He’s inspiring because he’s fully alive. The age just makes it harder for the rest of us to make excuses.

So I wrote this blog for him. But really, it’s a question for you:

Who’s the Phillip in your life?

Who is the person you know – maybe your neighbour, your grandparent, the quiet one at your running club – whose years don’t define their days? Who gets up every morning and chooses curiosity over comfort, effort over ease?

Go spend time with them. Ask them what they’re reading. Walk with them. Let them outpace you.

And then ask yourself: when someone writes about me one day, will they say my spirit outran my age?

Phillip would want you to think about that.

And then get back to work.
