Hunting a .com domain

As someone from Mexico aiming to build a global software brand, I quickly faced a common challenge: almost every desired .com domain was already taken. While many new domain extensions exist, .com remains the most trusted and memorable option. Instead of giving up, I got creative. I overcame the .com obstacle by adding prefixes and suffixes, which also helped me brand my products with shorter domains.

Finding a short .com domain is tough because most are already registered or priced unreasonably high. It’s frustrating that many domains are held for resale, making it difficult for newcomers to buy one. As a Mexican entrepreneur, I considered .com.mx domains since they're more accessible, but I chose not to use them because I wanted to reach a global audience.

Other internationally recognized extensions like .co, .net, and .org are available, but .com remains the most recognizable and memorable. I knew I needed a .com domain. One effective approach is to add prefixes or suffixes to your main word and check if they're available. Common prefixes include “use” and “get,” while popular suffixes are “stack,” “kit,” or “hq.” Even so, many good domains are already taken.

Recently, I found inspiration in a new prefix: “anti.” I first saw it with a software company called Antiwork and then with a note-taking tool named Antinote. This led me to explore domains combining “anti” with other words. I began to appreciate the “anti” prefix and thought it would suit my software products. I considered “antihq,” expecting it to be taken. To my surprise, it was available. The name made sense—Anti Headquarters—perfect for a company offering “anti” products. Plus, at just six letters, it's rare. I bought it immediately.

Now, I realize this is a strong domain name. I can pair the “anti” prefix with common words to create a family of products: Antinote, Antideployments, and Antitodo. Subdomains also work well: note.antihq.com, deployments.antihq.com, todo.antihq.com. The domain is flexible and reusable, which is very satisfying.

Securing a .com domain is challenging, but with luck and creativity, you can find a great one—maybe even better than expected. Keep experimenting with new prefix and suffix combinations, and stay open to naming trends for products and services.
