Allihies

On Saturday, after a full Irish breakfast, I left Castletownbere and walked the 10 miles to Allihies.

The full Irish breakfast. Lots of toast with orange marmalade and multiple cups of coffee are also part of it.

The route today was an ascent over these hills/mountains behind Castletownbere and then a decent to Allihies.

Right outside of Castletownbere there’s a stone circle. There are numerous of these along the trail. This one is a pretty good example. Some have only a few standing stones left.

There are numerous of these flowers in the wooded sections of the trail. I think they might be foxglove.

After getting to my B&B, I went to visit the copper museum in Allihies. From about 1820 to 1880 this area was a significant site for copper mining. After the mining production declined in this area, a lot of the miners moved to Butte Montana to work in the mines there.

The white sandy beach is a byproduct is made of crushed quartz, which was a byproduct of the copper mining production.

After the museum, I walked down to the bay and watched the waves for a while.

I ended my day with a delicious meal of beef, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables at O’Neill‘s pub.
