Castletownbere

On Thursday, I walked about 12 miles from Adrigole to Castletownbere. Initially it was supposed to be a bit farther. However, our host needed to take us from the B&B to the starting point and offered to take us a couple miles further down the road where a trail connected up with the Beara way. All of us folks were walking that day were in favor of taking the shorter option, particularly since it was supposed to rain in the afternoon.

Temperatures were in the upper 50s. The day started out overcast, became sunny for a couple hours, and then it did rain for several hours in the afternoon. A light drizzly rain, which has been my experience of all the rain over here so far.

The route was mostly on the side of the hills/mountains that overlook Bantry Bay.

Castletownbere is one of the larger villages on the peninsula and has a population of 860. It has one of the two banks that are on the peninsula. Fishing is a big part of the economy. The harbor is sheltered by Bere Island

On Friday, I visited some of the shops in town and did some laundry. In the afternoon, I took a walk out to see the ruins of Dunboy Castle.
