Dursey Island

On Sunday, a taxi took me and some other walkers down to visit Dursey Island.

We rode a cable car over to the island. It’s the only cable car of its kind in Ireland and is the primary means a transportation between the island and the mainland.

Bit of history about the island. According to a sign at the cable car station, the Vikings used to stash their Irish slaves on the island until they had as sufficient number to take them back to Scandinavia. Monks lived on the island at one point as well.

The weather was fantastic. Bright, clear, and sunny.

Some pictures of the island. You can see in the last two pictures that there are some houses on the island. There are people that live there year round. I had a nice chat along with a piece of cake from an island lady who lives there full time.

There is a signal tower from the Napoleonic wars.

If you look very carefully, you can see Skellig Michael in the distance off the north side of the island.

The remains of an old lighthouse at the very end of the island. There is active lighthouse on Bull Rock, which you can see farther out in the ocean.

A few more pictures off the side of the island

Because the weather was so beautiful, I decided to walk the 7 miles back to Allihies.

Some photos of the coast along the way.
