We had a little bit too much bickering and arguing from these two rascals today, so here is some proof that they love each other really.
Yes, the UK-style site in the field was a great place... but with no shop (including in the nearby village), no pool for the kids, and no data on our phones, it was unfortunately only ever going to be for one night.
However, the site we'd tried to get into the previous day had said to head back at 2ish and if there were any spare plots, we could have one - so we did exactly that. And... same deal as the other site yesterday, really packed and dusty, a chaotic shanty town of humanity that just isn't our idea of relaxing.
So we hit the road, heading west towards Portugal, and a site above the town of Plascencia. It was OK - big and relaxed - but we could get no internet, and with work starting again tomorrow, that's a non-negotiable. Our list of demands does mean that not every site is always going to be suitable to us, that's a definite truth.
I phoned ahead to the next one on our list, but they didn't answer, so we went there anyway, only to find they were full. There was another site less than a mile away, and by this time we were happy to take anything, so we headed there and gratefully checked in.
Honestly, Las Canadas Complejo Turistico really isn't our kind of place. Again, it's more like a holiday camp than a campsite, with proper "streets" of pitches. But it has an OK pool, a play park, a restaurant, the internet is strong, and there is plenty of shade. Our initial impression softened a little and we relaxed into it, even smiling at the site-wide tannoy announcements, Hi-de-Hi style, of whatever football tournament or other activity is about to start.
The Andalucian couple staying on the next plot to us, who I introduced myself to, told me that they've come here from Seville to "escape the heat" (it's 35.5C here today!) and that the site is mainly semi-permanent caravans owned by people who live locally, and who come here at weekends. They said yesterday it had been packed, but more than half of the people have now gone home so it's pretty relaxed - and will be till Friday. We'll be long gone by then.
All that said, we had a really nice meal in the campsite restaurant to mark the end of our "holiday holiday" today - it's back to "work", albeit just the four mornings a week, as of tomorrow morning.
Finally, Faye and I took Skye for a walk out of the campsite and to the big reservoir behind the place today, to check out where we can take everyone tomorrow for a bit of wild swimming, and to throw Skye in the water to cool her down. It was nice to get away for half an hour together, leaving the kids "in charge" of the van for a little while. Maya and Faye did message each other a couple of times, but it's another sign the kids are growing up.
