Portugal & Spain Tour Day 43: Horcajo de las Montes

The simple things: A quiet plot, a good view...

We were just discussing today how it feels like everything we love about the campervan life has come together right here, right how. We are in a gorgeous hilltop location, looking over rolling countryside. The site is small, well run and low key, with just enough to keep the kids happy. We are close enough to a sleepy town for me to walk in to get supplies daily, something important to us as we tend not to want to drive anywhere once we've settled in. And the weather is (for us) perfect: Bloody hot in the day, warm in the evenings, and just cool enough for sleeping comfortably at night with the door open, camping-style. No clouds. 100% summer.

We've learned - and are learning - so much this trip about what we like, what works and what doesn't for us. Small things like getting good at managing the dog "on tour" and figuring out cunning ways of prising the kids off of their electronics (and when to leave them to it) - but also a bigger thing, the beginnings of a new work/life set-up of the type we've always dreamed of.

So anyway, today we both headed out for our morning runs in the "Spanish Serengeti", basically out along a long, rolling, deserted road, then back again. Don't know about the big game of the Serengeti, but I did see the back end of a deer, who ran away from me at dawn as I passed the bush it was grazing besides.

And then the usual "weekday" stuff: We worked on laptops/iPads this morning, I walked into the tatty, quiet town to get some groceries at lunch, and we spent the afternoon chilling in the sunshine, and playing with the kids in the big, warm, semi-covered pool. The kids took the badminton racquets for a knock-around, and also found the table tennis table, which kept them amused for a while.

We had a supper of home-cooked coconut dal and rice as the sun went down, interrupted only by some other campers arriving at the next plot late on, a family with a caravan and a dog. We bustled Skye into her bed - she can "meet" her new neighbour tomorrow...
