Portugal & Spain Tour Day 49: Valdepeñas de Jaén

Amazingly, the Vuelta a España is in town! The trucks we heard as we tried to go to sleep last night were huge articulated lorries with hospitality, mechanics and support staff on board, and as the day went on, literally hundreds of people arrived in countless official vehicles - cars, vans, more lorries - as barriers were put out, a huge video screen set up, roads blocked off and so on.

Soon enough there were helicopters hovering overhead, all ready to welcome the riders to the end of Stage 11 of the 2021 competition, a 134km mountain route from Antequera to literally 100 yards up the road from our campsite.

At around 5pm we headed up the hill to find a vantage point, climbing the bank of the roads about 200m from the end, and enjoyed the building atmosphere as all the teams' support vehicles came up the hill - one man got over-excited, gave some lip to the local police, and got himself arrested as we waited!

Where we waited for the riders. No, I didn't manage to get an action shot, not in the slightest.

Eventually the riders rounded the corner, all clearly absolutely shattered from the final hill, Chris Froome up among them (he was eighth, we think), and we joined in shouting, waving paper glad hands at them, and generally making as much noise as possible - made easier by Skye barking as loud as she could.

I failed magnificently to get a photo of the excitement, but was really cool to see the best in the world taking on a truly difficult route, and to be fair, the first couple of dozen were very close to each other - really exciting stuff.

And then just as quickly as they arrived, they left, the last lorry pulling away as we bundled the kids up to bed, leaving us to enjoy the quietest night of the three so far, after easily the most exciting day.
