Portugal & Spain Tour Day 62: Ronda to Estepona

Ronda's famous bridge at dawn, no tourists in sight...

So, final run of the whole trip for Faye and me this morning, us both choosing to head into Ronda, which is a truly beautiful city in a stunning location - unlike anywhere else.

Breakfast including fresh bread from the campsite out of the way, and it was time to move. Like a well-oiled machine, we packed up the van - table away, awning rolled in, chairs folded and in their place, hammock folded away, roof down, bedding packed in the back, bikes on the rack - almost without thinking. No surprise after all the times we've done it this last two months.

The French lady who runs the place seems to have taken a real shine to me (unless she's the same with all the scruffy, ridiculously bearded blokes in masks), declaring "Monsieur Morse, you're leaving us, NOOOO!!! Come back soon please - like, next week!"

She went on to try to describe our kids, who she's got to get to know a bit with their continually borrowing and returning the crazy golf gear. She only managed, "Your kids are beautiful, really - so - just - BEAUTIFUL!", and handed me a big packed of biscuits to give to them for the journey. A nice and if we're honest somewhat unexpected end to our camping.

Looking south at sunrise from the park in Ronda city centre.

I forgot how beautiful and downright impressive the road is from Ronda to San Pedro. It may only be a short 45-minute drive, but it's world-class, and when the sea, Gibraltar (everyone screamed), Africa, and the whole western Costa del Sol all come into view, it's genuinely impressive.

Just as we were commenting that Rusty has done brilliantly for the last two months, literally about ten minutes from our Estepona home, there was a loud bang from the roof above us, that Faye thought was something hitting us. I diagnosed it as the roof pinging open, which proved to be the case - we probably hadn't checked it was shut properly before leaving, and the faster motorway speeds of the final few minutes of the journey popped it open. No apparent harm done (it was only open a bit), and we just closed it and moved on.

And then - home. We've driven into countless places this last two months, but the drive into Estepona is one of the prettiest anywhere. The council works hard to keep it beautiful, and the effort shows. A great town to have our holiday home in for sure. We made our way up the hill to the villa, and faced our final hurdle: The gates wouldn't open fully!

Yes we have no bananas.

It soon became clear why: Our banana tree, which until last year we didn't even realise was a banana tree, has decided to really go for it this summer, and is so heaving with bananas that it's blocking the gate. We just about managed to edge the van in nonetheless, before I expertly tied it back with, erm, an extension cable. We'll get Jose Antonio to have a proper look at that when he's doing the garden on Thursday, and hopefully do something a little more permanent and less embarrassing.

I cooked us a big paella for lunch, and we spent the afternoon starting to clean and tidy the van, our clothes, and all the rest. Later we decided to treat ourselves to something for supper we've only had once since we set off - pizza - so Dylan and I headed down to Dominos. We ate our pizza sat by the pool watching the sun set at the back of the house, reflecting on an epic trip we'll certainly never forget. 🏁
