Portugal Tour Day 4, Salema to Albufeira

I went on a dawn run through hay fields, following a single-track lane signposted to a beach I never actually reached, before returning to rouse the troops and make plans.

We decided to leave the Salema camp because of the mosquitoes, and the lack of a pool in the sweltering heat - although the weather is actually weird, a thin sun trying to break through high haze.

It was a 45-minute hop back east to get to Camping Albufeira, a classic big-scale resort campsite with a huge pool, bar, restaurant, shop, even a hairdresser. It's just up the hill from the beach (pictured), and very "open plan", which we are quite enjoying because there's lots going on around us. It is also good for the kids as they can bike around in safety, and also probably use the pool unattended. More for them to do, in other words.

Faye and the kids hit the pool in the afternoon as I prepared my fortnightly Sunday live stream DJ set, sat under our St George's flags as we also nervously awaited the Euro 2020 final later.

The DJ set went well in the end after a couple of false starts and some swearing (I had to switch to our more expensive Spanish SIM card data to get it to work, it seems the signal or service wasn't good enough on the Portuguese card we bought) - and then it was just a case of the football.

We set up around the iPad on our outdoor table to watch it. Dylan didn't quite make it to the end but listened to the inevitable from his bunk up in the van. If only Rashford had got it right (he's probably got the same penalty perfect 99 times out of 100 in training) we could have felt very differently today. But it's hugely encouraging for the World Cup, and what an unlikely voice of reason we have in British discourse in Gareth Southgate and his team. Well done to them all.
