I recently had a conversation with as friend about moving away from Google for my personal email. 

But why? Gmail works great. There's nothing inherently wrong with it.

Here's why: if I'm going to pay for something, I'd rather pay with money vs paying with attention and feeding the advertising machine, especially for stuff I don't want to support.

It's about control.
