Can you run Twitter with 2,000 employees?

This week Musk suggested he wants to lay off 75 percent of the current Twitter staff. People suggest that he is crazy. That this is not a realistic plan. But is he? It always amazes me how many people work for platform companies like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Did you know that when WhatsApp had more active users than currently on Twitter, they had fewer than 50 employees? That’s not even close to the 2,000 employees Musk suggests.

With the 50 employees of WhatsApp in mind, it makes sense to wonder what all the people at Twitter do. Frankly, I have no idea why a company like Twitter needs so many employees. Could this be a result of the golden age of social media platforms? How many people who work at these companies are just wasting a lot of time and money that could have been spent much better?

Although it’s not directly linked to the number of people who work at Twitter, I can’t resist making the link to employers complaining about how hard it’s to find new employees. Maybe Musk’s idea isn’t that crazy and we should extend it to other companies as well. If we lay off people who do office jobs that are basically useless, then the staff shortages in other sectors may be reduced (a little bit).

Of course, this is just me sharing a thought. But I hope a researcher comes up with a report on how many useless hours we waste on office jobs.
