Should OpenAI be more open?

With tremendous impact comes responsibility. The tech world has started implementing generative and interactive AI into tools we use in our daily lives. Search engines, mail applications, document tools, chatbots, etc. This will have a huge impact, so what about transparency? What do we know about these models?

Let's look at one of the most popular developments right now. The makers of ChatGPT just announced their latest model GPT-4, including a technical report. Once implemented in tools like Bing, the data used to train this model will impact the knowledge we consume. Bias in is bias out. So, what do we know about the data used?

Bad news: OpenAI does not share which data they use. A short reference in the technical report informs us about their decision. Maybe they should consider renaming their organization to CloseAI ;)

Not being transparent with a model that can have a significant impact is dangerous. For example, because the data used is probably biased and if we consume this model, we should have information about how biased it is. People have started using the processor of GPT-4, and I think they should rethink it. For example, it can cause us to get a possible false representation of the truth.

Do you remember how we could influence the search suggestions in Google? Repeating this trick with models like GPT-4 is a lot harder but not unimaginable.

It's similar to a TikTok trap but with a more significant impact. These models are getting implemented in various applications we use in our daily lives. The bias of these models can affect the information we consume. It can even serve us false information we are unaware of. Or if you're into conspiracy thinking, it could contain propaganda from the tech world...or worse.

With TikTok, authorities have started thinking about banning its use because of a lack of transparency and uncertainty. Should we also ban applications from using non-transparent AI models?

About Robbert Bos

I love to make data analytics, data science, AI and ML projects easier to run, more transparent to use and fun to collaborate on. With AskAnna, I work on a platform that supports this. On HEY World I write about it.
