Why we should not give a Friendly Incumbent Endorsement to Andrea Cardenas

Dear Members of the Central Committee,

On Tuesday, please vote "No" in the friendly incumbent endorsement of Andrea Cardenas.

Councilwoman Cardenas has unfortunately generated a storm of bad press regarding the conflicts of interests she has between her role as a City Councilwoman and her leadership role in the political consulting firm, Grassroots Resources, run by her brother, Jesus Cardenas.

The seven recent articles below highlight why her for-profit political work with Grassroots Resources cause a potential conflict with her role as an elected official, her refusal to disclose the clients with which she worked (which include the Deputy Sheriff's Association), her refusal to recuse herself from council business from which their firm had an apparent benefit, and her conflicting statements regarding her role at her brother's firm.

Additionally, at the South Region Caucus, Councilmember Cardenas stated she is not under investigation. However, there is a public open FPPC investigation looking into her failure to disclose her work and clients at Grassroots Resources (FPPC Complaint Num 2023-00305).

Councilmember Cardenas stated on her candidate questionnaire that she has not campaigned against an endorsed Democratic Candidate in the last four years.  An analysis paper was published explaining how, in 2020, Grassroots Resources was paid $30,000.00 to consult for the PAC, "The Affordable Housing Coalition", which sent out negative, racist, mailers against endorsed Democratic Candidates Todd Gloria and Marcus Bush, while simultaneously being paid by the Democratic Party to manage the South Region campaign: https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=2BA404BDB6AA808F!125&ithint=file%2cdocx&authkey=!AFtFh-bGOdBzba4

Councilwoman Cardenas's many scandals will be a liability for her campaign and a potential liability for our entire Democratic slate if she is endorsed by our party. As a party, we do not want to be associated with her many issues. Let us not forget the issues and negative press that sunk Ammar Campa Najjar in the previous election cycle, and also lead to losses for school board candidates running with him on Democratic slates.

Please vote "No" on this friendly incumbent endorsement.

The news articles documenting Councilmember Cardenas's scandals are shown below. (The Union Tribune articles may have a paywall, the La Prensa and Voice of San Diego articles do not...)

Let the voters decide.
