To stay healthy, food must enter and exit your body. The sooner, the better. Similarly, thoughts must come in and pass out. The sooner, the better. The longer they stay stuck in your head, the more they rot and the more unpleasantness they create.
What makes a thought stuck?
Out of the thousands of thoughts we have in a day, the ones that cause even a little bit of fear will stick. It’s an inherent mechanism to protect you from danger. For example:
- What if someone disagrees with what you say?
- What if you sound less intelligent?
- What if you don’t perform well at your job?
- What if you don’t get that new job?
How do you know that a thought is stuck?
You know it when your mind is uneasy. It continuously tries to find ways to escape the imaginary situations. You can’t stop it.
How to get the junk thoughts out?
Detect them sooner. The sooner, the easier. Be aware of the junk thoughts and don’t misunderstand them as reality. Close your eyes, place a hand on your heart, and take a deep breath. Tell your mind, "You’re wrong. It’s a false alarm. Reality is different. You’re safe." Exhale, and as you exhale, imagine the thought leaving your body and dissipating into the air. Repeat until you feel better.
