A new mega charity bundle has appeared on Itch, once again tricking tens of thousands of Gamers into momentarily not being horrible! For the minimum price of $5, you can support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's efforts in occupied Palestine, and acquire more video games, tabletop RPGs, and miscellaneous doodads than it's possible to experience in a human lifetime.
The Random Bundle Game site has incorporated the added titles, making it easy to select something to try from the incomprehensibly large list of potential downloads. Whenever I roll the dice and play what comes up, I'll blog my impressions here!
I use a very simple rating rubric. Most titles weigh in at 2 or 3 stars, with 1, 4, or 5 stars being uncommon and notable!
⭐ Ugh! Actively disliked it.
⭐⭐ Didn't make it to the end, but there were aspects of it I appreciated.
⭐⭐⭐ Good enough to stick with for a full playthrough, whatever that means for the genre in question.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made me want to keep playing even after a victory!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extraordinary. Memorable and thought-provoking beyond the bounds of the play experience!
My first such title isn't even a game:
Textreme 2

A text editor with literal bells and whistles. Clackety typewriter noises, explosions when you delete things, sparkly text effects you can add by surrounding words with *splats* or -dashes- or what have you… it’s an interesting inversion of the minimalist approach that most Notepad-alikes take. I wouldn’t want to use it every time I need to jot something down, but for some kinds of writing task, the whimsy could be motivating! Mercifully, each individual bit of goofiness can be turned on or off with ease.
