SC: Monster Pack 1 - DELUXE EDITION
Genre: Art collection
Bundle: Racial Justice
Sabe's rating: 👼👼👼👼
Oh right, I'd forgotten about content packs! Let's go with the TTRPG rating scale, but where references to playing games map to "using this content".
Seraph Circle, then! This is a collection of transparent-background image files with illustrations of monsters. They're designed as sprites for use in traditional JRPGs, with strong silhouettes and bold colors. Those same attributes, though, would make them really handy as tokens on a virtual tabletop like Roll20! So don't sleep on asset packs like this if the Roll20 Marketplace doesn't have what you're looking for.
There's 40 distinct monster designs here, each of which has several variants. The variations are mostly the form of palette swaps and changes to detail layers, suggesting different elemental affinities or simply higher-tier versions of a given monster. Some, though, are enough to revise the concept, turning a vampire into an angel or a witch into undead. If the base sprite is something you'd find useful, you should be able to settle on a variant that meets your needs.
The designs on offer provide a nice mix of classics, like mimics and giant lizards and liches, and wild SC-specific creations, like an FFVI Kefka-esque amalgamation of figures labeled simply "Darkgod". I put this at four stars because these images make me seriously want to use them! You'll be able both to pick these up to represent existing monsters in your encounter design, and be inspired by the images to come up with new beasties for your bestiary. I'm not running any monster-slayer fantasy at the moment, but when I do, this will absolutely be in my back pocket. This was a steal as a bundle find, and worth the $15 if you didn't get the bundle but have need of some monster tokens!
