Leisure & the Ability to Celebrate

You know it when you feel it- leisure.

It’s elusive. It’s good. It’s more than binge-watching Netflix or having a drink. Leisure contributes to our highest good as humans.

Joseph Pieper said this about leisure, “The soul of leisure, it can be said, lies in ‘celebration’. Celebration is the point at which the three elements of leisure come to a focus: relaxation, effortlessness, and superiority of ‘active leisure’ to all functions.” (Leisure: the Basis of Culture)

This past weekend, we had some friends over. Food, laughter, games, fireworks, sitting around, sharing stories, patriotism, music, chasing the dog…all of it.  Seven hours of just being together and celebrating good things.

When was the last time you experienced leisure? This week, can you make some space for another opportunity for leisure?
