Slow Down When You Pray

Do you remember when you learned how to drive? You were likely introduced to the term, “velocitization” which refers to the tendency to drive too fast.

Think about the last time you were on a highway and then turned off on to a side road. Be honest: were you still in highway mode and were you driving a bit too fast?

This can be dangerous. First, we can drive too fast. Second, we can be unaware that we’re driving too fast.

This happens in prayer as well. Here’s an example from work: we have a Blessed Sacrament chapel on the 2nd floor. At various times during the day, I pop in to make a visit. Try as I might, my mind often lingers from the meeting I just attended or jumps ahead to the rest of my day.

This is velocitization, prayer style.

As Advent approaches, why not slow down when you pray. For me, this is not just a mindset. It applies to reading.

Reading my Bible. Reading an article in Catholic news. Reading and saying prayers.

If I can slow down, leaving the highway for just a few minutes, the Lord can reach me more gently and in return, I can receive His love.
