I recently hosted an online event called the Nonprofit Productivity Summit and it was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of 2021. That and coaching my son’s soccer team but that’s another blog post for another day.
In the lead up to the Summit, I decided to donate 10% of the profits to a local ministry called New Bethany Ministries. NBM works with the homeless here in Bethlehem, PA and does incredible work. Their signature event for the community to participate in is called Luminaria Night.
You can purchase “Luminaria kits” for your driveway and then on a particular day, the whole town lights up their kits. A kit contains paper lunch bags, sand and candles. The proceeds from the kits go to underwrite their work. I purchased one kit and also made the Summit donation as I had promised.
Yesterday was Luminaria Night and we set up our bags along the driveway. We found that you couldn’t really see the candles because the Christmas spotlight on the house was too bright.
I decided to turn off the Christmas lights. Then, we could see the Luminaria as could all of our neighbors. For one night, they knew something was different. We had to stop the spotlights in order to see the candles.
I imagine there are a number of life lessons from this. As a savvy reader, I’ll leave that to you.
In the meantime, Merry Christmas.
