The “Interest Factor” of Prayer

I once dated a young woman who had a profound interest in Saint Therese of Lisieux. A man at work has a strong devotion to Saint Rita. My sister in law is drawn to the Divine Mercy devotion.

Why is it that we are drawn to some things and not others when it comes to our faith?

From my life, I’ve been re-reading Dorothy Day’s diaries, a massive work that spans decades. Duty of Delight takes you behind the scenes at a woman who resonates with me.

Why does the life of a woman who chose to live in poverty connect with my suburban lifestyle? I’m not really sure but that’s exactly the point I’d like to make.

Sometimes things, people, devotions, saints, etc. just connect with us. And us with them. The learning is to go with it, to trust your gut and to lean into your interest.

Let God take you as far as He desires into that saint/devotion/spirituality. There’s a reason you are interested in that. Trust that God will show you the “why” behind your curiosity.
