When Was the Last Time God Spoke to You?

The default for many Catholics is to pray prayers of petition and supplication. We ask for things and ask for others.

This is good- there is a lot of need out there. A lot of hurting people.

But I wonder how God feels when we show up, day after day, with our laundry list of people and things. I wonder if He wants more, if He desires deeper, and if He longs for even more intimacy than a list of supplications can provide.

Ask Him. That’s my counsel and advice that I apply to my own relationship with God. A few mornings a week, ask, “Lord, what do you want from me today? What message can you share with me today?”

He might tell you something that will surprise you. He might not say anything at all. The key is the ask and the wait. The ask is scary but the wait may be even more intimidating. In America at least, we are not very good at waiting in silence for seconds or even minutes.

But ask and wait… that’s where intimacy can occur and how the Lord can break through our many requests of Him. That’s where He can speak right to our hearts in ways that we cannot imagine.
