You Can’t Fire Everyone (Weeds & Wheat)

Today’s Gospel is a tough one for homilists. Which part of the parable from Matthew 13 do you emphasize?

This reflection provides some helpful background on Biblical farming and the idea of poisoning another’s crop with weed infiltration. It’s worth a read for you RoundUp fans who despise the weeds in your garden.

No matter how you look at the passage, the fact remains that we live in a broken world with some striving for holiness and others ignoring God completely. Early in my career, my wife Cary pulled me aside and said, “you know, you can’t fire everyone”.

What she meant was that you have to find the good in others, even when they drive you crazy. Even when they’ve done you wrong. Even still, finding the good is a Godly practice.
