Mein tiefster Respekt gilt allen alleinerziehenden Menschen.
Fühlt euch verstanden und gedrückt. 🫂
Alles geht vorbei.

A few thoughts about our relationship to the concepts of work and vacation.

Note: Please do NOT take this text as a general criticism of the very individual decision to go on vacation during this phase of the pandemic development. I am only reflecting here on our relationship to the terms work and vacation. Thank you.

I think there would be less need to talk about „giving up vacations” if more people enjoyed their work, if more people could really identify with what they give so much of their lives to.

But that ties right into the next belief: „Everything in life can’t always be fun.” Of course it can’t. But why should it be work, of all things, that we can’t enjoy?

Vacation is considered a redemptive principle for all the „drudgery”. The commandment not to go on vacation in times of pandemic is studiously ignored by some. Corona was and is hard for everyone. People are going crazy, they need a „timeout”.

(„Timeout,” as if you can take yourself out from time. Consequently, there is a „on-time”, the time when you are energized and „functioning”.)

„I will not let this freedom be taken away from me.” „I have earned this vacation.” So you take it. Back home, however, you are first in quarantine. The freedom you take on the one hand is taken away again on the other. 🤷🏼♀️

Posting this as a German citizen, I ask myself: Is there still something of the postwar reconstruction mentality in the linguistic and thus mental hardening the concept of work? Something out of a grievance through defeat that has not been fully overcome?

In the eyes of many, only those who really „toil” and „slave away until they drop” are considered full-fledged workers. Only then does someone enjoy the right to vacation.

The question of whether this work or this vacation is meaningful or efficient is not of secondary or tertiary importance. To ask it alone seems to be a sacrilege. Above all with regard to the concept of work.

Quotation marks galore! But how do you see the topic „to go on vacation”, especially during these times?

Do you have to say something about it, then just reply to this message or follow the train of thought here on Twitter or send me your views by mail. 💌

Wieder Zuhause sitzt man dann allerdings erst mal in Quarantäne.

The restaurant next to our apartment has reopened its outdoor patio for the first time since the pandemic began, and I’ve never actually thought about what it’s like to relearn the simple but complex smell of a crowd.

Nothing will ever be the same again. That’s a truism. Of course, nothing will ever be the way it used to be because that is the fine but goddamn fundamental dividing line between the concepts of past, present, and future. What we’re really saying, especially in relation to the pre-pandemic era, is that we will no longer be able to reject the pressing issues of our time as naively, as carelessly, as escapistically as we did before.

A few days ago I was in a crowded indoor market for the first time in over a year and, my gosh, did it feel like a play. Or like the Truman Show, except Truman smells a rat right from the first minute. That’s about how I imagine virtual reality at its very best: super real, but also not real at all. I couldn’t place this feeling I had in this market hall at first. Now I understand it better.

It’s a kind of suspense effect that resonates these days. An underlying uncertainty that colors the normality that is now slowly reappearing and makes it seem oppressive and deceptive. We have rebuilt our shaky house of cards. On very thin ice.

If this pandemic can serve as a catalyst for anything at all, it is as a flawless marker that has exposed the systemic failures of a globalized society. I submit that most people in this profoundly confusing 2021 carry with them the constant unease that things can no longer go on as they once were. If science is correct, the Coronavirus will most likely be as endemic to humanity as the annual flu epidemic. Reality has not yet ended our slumber.

What is there to do now? How can we think about the new Now? Another summer of uncertain vibes?

In that respect, one might say: thank you, Great Pause, for pointing this out. I hope we will make the best of it.

“Some days you wake up and immediately start to worry. Nothing in particular is wrong, it’s just the suspicion that forces are aligning quietly and there will be trouble.”

There is a principle in ethics that forces us to carefully think about the consequences of an action and consider whether its moral value is determined solely by its outcome. The trolley dilemma is a classic experiment developed by philosopher Philippa Foot in 1967 and adapted by Judith Jarvis Thomson in 1985.

https://strongbytes.ai/the-trolley-dilemma-in-ai/

And to be honest, I have a very bad feeling about this.

There is a new kind of social platform gaining momentum and it sneaked under my radar. See, I'm just a bloke from good old Europe that publishes ideas and half-baked thoughts about how to not totally fuck up this great social experiment called civilization, so that shouldn't really surprise anyone. Most of the time I have very sensitive filters for every new kid on the social media block because whatever cultural, digital, and societal shift happens in the US, it's probably a good indicator of what is going to happen over here with a slight delay.

Think about every negative social aspect that Alex Jones, Breitbart, Fox News and right-wing propelled hate speech has brought to the world, multiply it with 1 million and you get a slight idea of what a society could look like if these new fear-based networks are getting real traction. Maybe you already guessed it.

Yep. We are screwed.

Citizen is a crime-reporting app that is growing a user base of freaked-out customers. It wants to scale to a „vertically integrated, 24-hour news-and-reporting network for crime, which, by offering constant notifications, live media, and premium protection services, including in-person private security, (and) hopes to monetize the fears of an uncertain public.“ It's building a paranoid, profitable future. And the monetization part is what scares me the most.

Read the full article here:
https://www.sherold.blog/the-citizen-app-is-building-a-paranoid-profitable-future/

(And it made me think of a fundamentally important principle.)

Truth is, there are hardly any good reasons to know if someone’s available or away at any given moment. If you truly need something from someone, ask them. If they respond, then you have what you needed. If they don’t, it’s not because they’re ignoring you — it’s because they’re busy. Respect that! Assume people are focused on their own work.

Jason Fried — Active? Away? How about neither.

I know there is a lot of chitchat going on about everything related to Basecamp’s internal decisions that I don’t want to talk about right now. All the mumbles left aside, I really like Jason's way of thinking in his piece of writing even if he cannot cover the entire working world mindset with this opinion. There are people — and I guess not just a few — that can be totally productive in a restrictive 9 to 5 working environment AND are being completely happy with it.

Here comes the part that got me thinking:

But it wasn’t until we gave up on Presence that we really got to embrace the complete sense of calm that comes from not caring about when someone is working (or not) or where someone is (or isn’t) at this very moment.

Trust! That’s the reason why I like his thoughts because it addresses a deeply ingrained human feeling and the way how disrespectful big company treats this feeling and doesn’t take it seriously. Trust is good but control is better — this is such an old, sad mantra. And when I speak about trust towards employees then that also means trust towards one's own work. An exuberant compulsion to control is always linked to one’s own insecurity.

In my medium-long life, I had several opportunities to get the idea of what it’s like to work for big German companies with more than 1k permanent employees and, oh boy, welcome to the Middle Ages of work culture. With really just a few small exceptions (an advertising agency: 5 people, an editorial office: 8 people, a running sandals distributor: 3 people), all of the companies, even those that claimed to have a seemingly open-minded, eye-to-eye corporate culture, it was always a form of tacit distrust of the work of others.

So much insecurity towards oneself. So much tension. That was mental.

Of course, that’s certainly not how things work in all large companies in this country. And the Corona pandemic in particular set things in motion that might not have become reality for another decade. Sometimes people look at me a bit weird when I tell them what a great time we live in. All the deaths and suffering and misery are terrible and I sincerely hope that we have learned something for a coming pandemic. But now, after the big break, there are so many chances and opportunities to do things differently, to think differently. And how we want to reshape our working lives is just one of many things.

Jason Fried | TEDx Midwest – Why work doesn't happen at work.
