Be curious about AI today

Curiosity is a strong desire that leads to action.  Without action you may be interested, but you're not learning.

You don't need to be an expert -- you can learn AI later -- Jason Fried is spot on.  But you should be curious about it today.

tl;dr via ChatGPT

Embrace curiosity and take action to explore AI's exciting potential, without the pressure of becoming an expert. By actively integrating AI tools into your daily routines and experimenting with their various applications, you'll discover new possibilities and experiences. As you build intuition around AI and collaborate with it regularly, you'll unlock its full potential, leading to a bright and innovative future for your work.

Some have already become experts at todays AI tools.  Why?  Do we honestly think the future of AI relies on  prompt engineering?  Because the AI can't quite understand us?  Seems like a common problem, perhaps the folks building AI agree.

Todays slate of tools were basically invented yesterday.  They're barely in a beta and rapidly changing.  Don't become an expert at something with a shelf life of a few months.

The newness of the tools isn't an excuse though.  Take a peek and notice the sea change.  Get a feel for this vast new ocean by wading in and swimming around.  Invite AI to collaborate on some existing parts of your day.

Be curious about the ways AI might fit into your existing routines.  You don't need any goals other than learning.
  • If AI writes you a little javascript, or a marketing blurb, or an email response, and you decide to publish it, that's amazing.  If it's trash, that's fine too.  You don't need to become a prompt engineer.
  • Maybe try a recipe?  If AI takes the things in your fridge and suggests a recipe, and the meal comes out bland, that's learning (and now you have an excuse to order from Gordo's again).
  • Or the next thing you need to look up, ask AI alongside your regular googling.  Have a conversation about the answer.

You're building some intuition around the AI.  That understanding will compound over time and keep you in the race.  As fast as things are moving, it's going to be a marathon and not a sprint.

I've made hundreds of images using Midjourney.  My cofounders make fun of me any time we're chatting about a new idea.  Because they know I'm going to try to make images for it!  You know what?  Most of them have been terrible!  But we've had lots of laughs and I've had lots of fun.

I'm still curious about AI.  I don't know how it will ultimately fit in to my work and my life.  It has created copy, images, and code that have literally blown me away.  I am jaw-droppingly excited about the future, adding AI as a collaborator.

To be honest, it's mostly slowing me down right now.  But sometimes, you have to slow down to speed up.
