Steve's Reads July 9 2021

Summer always gets a little slower in my business. People are out traveling and having fun rather than obsessing over watches on the internet. It's perfect timing for me. Our new baby is growing like a weed, mom is doing great, big and medium bro are taking his arrival quite well, and I'm loving having a large family. Like everyone else, apparently, I'm spending a lot of time on Zillow imagining another life in AZ, TX, or FL, but in the meantime Los Angeles is hard to beat in the summer (or any other season for that matter). Every time I try to leave I get hit with a perfect 82 degree sunny day. Life is good. And now the links....

Written for the layman, this is a look at the future. Highly recommended read for everyone interested in where things are going.

Twitter thread on Red America's thoughts on the election, media, etc

https://twitter.com/martyrmade/status/1413165168956088321?s=21

I try not to post much directly from Twitter here, but this thread was too good not to share. I don't know who the author is, but he absolutely nails it. No matter one's political affiliation or opinions of the facts, I believe this is the closest anyone has come to properly describing the mindset of likely well over 50 million Americans, not to mention many people worldwide who are plugged in due to social media. That alone makes it an incredibly important dynamic to understand. Read the whole thing, ignore how it makes you feel, just try to understand. For bonus points, lean in to parts that make you uncomfortable and do your own research on the subjects. This dynamic will shape the next decade or more.

Accountability is a Prerequisite of Respect

https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/accountability-is-a-prerequisite

Freddie DeBoer always has interesting takes from the left. In this case, the idea of accountability is applied to race stuff, but it could just as easily be applied to any other hot button issue. None of this is new, many billions of dollars are being spent and have been for a long time. Look for positive results or be skeptical.

The Real Reason They Blame Heat Deaths, Blackouts, and Forest Fires on Climate Change Is Because They’re Causing Them

Enter climate change. Michael Shellenberger is one of my favorite on the topic. This is a good one.

The Most Precious Resource is Agency

https://simonsarris.substack.com/p/the-most-precious-resource-is-agency

I think about this a lot with my children. Our society is making it harder and harder for many different types of people to contribute, chief among them being young people. In our house we like to push the ideas of independence and competence. I hope we'll be able to find our kids opportunities to showcase and hone these as they get older.

Straussian Beatles cofounders — We Can’t Work It Out

Let's end with a fun one from Tyler Cowen. What does "We Can Work It Out" by The Beatles actually say?
