Sunday Chillin' #23: Warm Nights

Hello hello, welcome back to this week's edition of Sunday Chillin'! Hope everyone is doing well, wherever you are in the big wide world.

Imagine that there are 1000 cars in a line stuck in standstill traffic on the highway. Now something happens at the very front of the line and the first car starts to move. If every driver after the first car takes ~1 second to begin moving (thereby introducing a 1 second delay to the next car), then the 1000th car will start to move ~17 minutes after the event happens. And this is with only 1000 cars and assuming none of these drivers are lollygagging on their phones!

Billions of minutes of humanity's time must be lost every single day to inefficiencies like these in so many different circumstances. Can you think of other such situations and what we might do to improve them? [1]

Somewhat tangentially, today's songs are all ones that I enjoy listening to on evening drives in the summer. Hope you enjoy!

I know I say this every week, but these are some Prime Songs™ so I highly recommend giving them a listen (especially since this newsletter just has music now).

Either way though, see you all next Sunday!

[1] In the case of traffic inefficiencies, a fully-connected network of self-driving cars could certainly alleviate or even eliminate the problem. Of course, the current difficulties mostly revolve around whether self-driving algorithms recognize small children and old ladies as pedestrians or bonus points in GTA target practice, so I suppose we're a ways away from that utopian dream.
