Lots of countries do things that are just brilliant. Perhaps the origins are lost to history or a wee bit of glossing over them. But nonetheless they are just straight out of the genius book. Great ideas that could fill a book and then one more. The kind of stuff you wish you had thought of… or at least bought stock in when they launched the IPO.
The Americans got theirs right with Thanksgiving. They nailed that one. No revisions to the business plan, the marketing was perfect, and the sales pitch sold itself. You take 364 days of the grind of life and hit the pause button, preferably with a Coors Light. You add outrageous amounts of food… like a British Sunday Roast on Red Bull. You mix in good wine and plenty of beer. An American football game… check! Pecan pie, double check! Most important of all you open your door, your home, and welcome in your friends and family, all of them. The ones from near and the ones from far… and even the ones you don’t like :).
You eat, you drink, you tell embarrassing stories, you snooze on the couch, and you laugh so much that eventually it hurts (or you pee a little!). But most important you stop for solemn moment, take a deep breath, pluck up the gumption to be a little bit sappy and you give thanks. You give thanks for family, for the bounty on the table, for health, and the chance to share it with those we love. You nod quietly to those that have left us… but know are somewhere looking down with invisible hugs wrapped close around.
Ours is a little family. One table is just enough to bring us all together and sadly we have a few empty seats. But when we come together, and for those hours we open our hearts, we are the biggest *Famwee* there could ever be. We are like all the London fireworks at New Year’s Eve going off in one tremendous minute of “OMG… will you look at that!”.
I won’t see everyone I am thankful for this Thanksgiving. So to those I will and for those I won’t… and for those I can’t... I just want to say… thank you. Thank you for being in my little circle of life. Thank you for finding your way in. Thank you for sticking around. I have much to be grateful for but just like the Americans and Thanksgiving… I got it right… when I got you guys.
