Crossing the Pyrenees

We woke this morning to rain, put on our rain gear and headed out on the steepest part of our journey, crossing the 1075 metre Roncesvalles pass.

The pass is the site of a significant battle. In 778 the Basques defeated Charlemagne; an event that is still recalled as relevant to their independence. In this battle Roland, was killed; his life inspired the medieval epic Chanson de Roland.   A church and monastery emerged at the site, and pilgrims began to make this a significant stop.

The road up involved several steep switchbacks and in the pouring rain it was extremely tough going.  I walked my bike up the steepest parts.

We arrived soaking wet along with many walkers at the Albergue de Roncesvalles, a sprawling complex that accommodates 183 pilgrims.  Dutch volunteers greet guests, really well organized.

Today was a huge physical challenge for me, and I was completely overcome with emotion when we reached the pass.  I am grateful that I have the means and ability to take on this adventure.

We will take part in the pilgrims dinner at 830 and will attend the mass just before that.  Much to give thanks for.
