St Jean Pied de Port is a fortified town at the base of the Ronceveux Pass route over the Pyrenees. (Or Roncesvalles in Spanish) Historic pilgrimage routes have converged here, a stopping point for pilgrims to prepare themselves physically and spiritually to make their way over the mountains. Today, most of the pilgrims walking the Way of St James begin their journey here.
The ride here was challenging but exhilarating. The Basque region is incredibly beautiful, undulating hills, lots of sheep and cows (wearing bells, a charming sound) and villages that share a similar Basque look—white houses with burgundy shutters. Signs are in French and Basque.
We took a rest day today. Tomorrow we ride 25 km to Roncesvalles in Spain , the steepest part of our journey. Treated ourselves to a great dinner and the local cider.
We stayed one night in an Airbnb and tonight is our first in a auberge for pilgrims. We are in a dorm, sharing a bunk bed. Today was the first day we meet others who are doing the Camino. It was a joy to share our experiences with others but also overwhelming. Larry and I do like our solitude.
The photo of Larry and I was at the highest point of our ride here. I was completely spent!
