Black & Blue Fridays

I am old enough to remember the REAL Black Friday events. Where people would sleep in sleeping bags outside of Best Buy or whatnot.... to be first in line when the doors opened up. Ah yes, I remember browsing those Black Friday sales at GameStop, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and locally. But I noticed something.... over the last few years none were insane FIGHT inducing deals. The type of deals you wake up at 5 am and sit in front of your local mall and be ready to pummel your fellow man over a deal.

Whats going on here ? Retailers....don't you understand we demand a SACRIFICE every Black Friday? Our morals and integrity as humans aren't that high - as long as we get that big screen TV super cheap. Even if it means committing assault with shopping bags to get it. I remember looking back to the 1980s.... how people would fight over Cabbage Patch Dolls.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the Monday following Thanksgiving in the United States, traditionally one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. It originated in 2005 as a way to extend Black Friday deals into the workweek, focusing on e-commerce to capture shoppers who couldn't make it to physical stores. While not an official holiday, it's a massive retail event with deep discounts on electronics, apparel, home goods, and more. In recent years, the lines between Black Friday (in-store and online) and Cyber Monday have blurred, with sales often starting early and running for several days.

This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 27, 2025, making Black Friday November 28 and Cyber Monday December 1. Many retailers kick off Cyber Week deals as early as the weekend before (starting November 29 or 30) and extend them through December 2 or longer to maximize shopping windows.

For me, I don't think DISCOUNTING works. When I see a Black Friday | Cyber Monday special, the first thing that comes to my mind is "Wow, look at the margins they were enjoying all year long.... they were making a fortune on me! Now it's 50% off and they are STILL making a profit."

Especially in 2025. I am thinking that Black Friday | Cyber Monday sales are just the prices that things cost before the tariffs. Anyway, many of our vendors have their own Black Friday | Cyber Monday deals. And we are happy to pass those deals along to our customers, clients, members. For me, it is easier for us to simply donate money to FeedingAmerica.org every time someone buys something from us. This is why you see FeedingAmerica.org on the main menu bar of NYDLA.org. They are our official charity.

No discounts. Just paying it forward. After all, we already give the majority of our margins back to our members. So, we have no need for promoting crazy sales. We already offered crazy wholesale pricing all year long.

AND: if you buy something that normally costs $1,000 and you get it for $750 you did not save $250. You spent $750. Unless it is gas or groceries or things that you were going to buy anyway.
