The Distance Learning Association has been teaching, training, coaching, mentoring members in all things 'remote' since 1983. Pre-Internet. Long before e-commerce became a thing.

Agentic commerce is a model of online shopping (and broader buying/selling) in which autonomous or semi-autonomous AI agents act on behalf of consumers or businesses to research products, compare options, negotiate, and often complete purchases with limited or no step-by-step human involvement.

Traditional e-commerce: You search, open tabs, compare prices/reviews, fill a cart, and click “buy” yourself. Conversational / assisted AI (chatbots, recommendation engines, basic GenAI shopping help): The AI suggests options or answers questions, but you still make the final decision and you complete checkout.

Agentic Commerce: The AI agent takes goal-directed action. You state intent and constraints (e.g., “find hiking boots in size 10 under $150 with free returns that arrive by Friday”), and the AI agent searches across retailers, evaluates options against your preferences, and can place the order (or present a shortlist for quick approval). Could be laptops, video cameras, or competing cloud services like Zoom or GoToMeeting or Webex or Google Meet. The AI Agent 'does it all' for you, the human end-user customer or client. You now have the world's smartest shopper working for you (or for your business). And, they have the best coupons.

Modern AI agents go beyond simple scripts: they can reason, plan multi-step workflows, use tools/APIs, remember preferences, and operate within guardrails you set (budget limits, preferred brands, delivery windows, approval thresholds).

Typical flow: You give a goal and limits (one-time or standing rules, such as auto-reorder household items when stock is low or price drops). The AI agent discovers and evaluates products using structured data, catalogs, APIs, and real-time information. It compares price, availability, shipping, reviews, return policies, etc.

Depending on permissions, it either recommends options, builds a cart for your approval, or completes the purchase using pre-authorized payment methods. It can even handle post-purchase steps (tracking, returns, reorders).

Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old: In short, agentic commerce shifts the work of shopping from the human to capable AI agents that can execute the full (or near-full) purchase journey under your approved rules. It is still evolving rapidly in 2026, with varying levels of real-world autonomy depending on the platform and merchant readiness.
