Dick Fosbury was an American high jumper and Olympic gold medalist, best known for inventing the "Fosbury Flop," a revolutionary backward jumping technique that transformed the sport. Born Richard Douglas Fosbury on March 6, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, he grew up in Medford and attended Oregon State University, where he developed his unconventional style after struggling with traditional methods like the straddle jump. Fosbury's breakthrough came at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where he won gold and set an Olympic record of 2.24 meters using the Flop, debuting it on the international stage and popularizing it worldwide — today, it's the standard technique used by high jumpers. After retiring from competition, he worked as a civil engineer and later served as a county commissioner in Blaine County, Idaho. Fosbury died on March 12, 2023, in Salt Lake City, Utah, from lymphoma at age 76.
