Etamorphosis

Day -48 (12/17/2024), Washington, DC

This song was playing when the vibeshift stirred. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq8PyyMbrYQ

I don't know what caused it. The certainty of finding solutions to all my moving challenges, the pre-release of the American Riichi Association site, or feeling the tarmac underfoot again. (Who knows how many more times I will get to experience the tarmac of the Metropolitan Branch trail with its dodging + weaving bikes, loud trains and numb graffiti.)

The feelings of my 2019 trip returned; not in full force yet, just a few tweaks and hues. Specifically, vibes from early in the trip: anticipation, uncertainty, giddiness, trepidation. Most importantly: the perspective shift that reframes the current experience.

Disassociation. The trip is the subject of analysis. It becomes easy to view decisions from the standpoint of adventuremaxing. The traveler withdraws, and becomes difficult to live the movie and not just watch it. At the extreme, it can feel like the video game sequence in the movie The Beach (coincidentally, the only book I read in Thailand).

The edges between lived reality and the Trip blurred a little bit today, like the early onset of a drug. Or a fever.

It's so much easier to take risks from a place of emotional disengagement.

The trip is starting. Let's see if I can engage with uncallused hands and no sunglasses.
