Most days I consider myself fairly conservative, not to an extreme, but more or less. So I thought I would list some of the major topics in the political arena and jot down my thoughts on them. I'm using this poll as my reference. So let's get started from the top.
Healthcare
I feel all life saving healthcare should be covered somehow. It only makes sense to me. And yes, diabetes kills people, so I would consider that life saving healthcare. I think procedures that change your natural appearance should not be covered except in the case of disfigurement from accidents, or making a non function body function.
Otherwise, cosmetics and others should be paid for by the patient or through an insurance they pay for somehow. But not with tax dollars.
I also believe most federal funding of healthcare should shift to preventative care not reactive.
The Economy
The government should not be able to print money at will, we should go back on the gold standard. If a company fails, it should fail, my tax dollars should not bail them out. I also believe in an America first type system and promotion of keeping money as local as possible when it can be. Including keeping as much manufacturing as possible within the US.
Immigration
I believe in a fair process for immigration. The system obviously needs fixing, people shouldn't be waiting a decade to get the ball rolling. On the same note, they can't just come here and wait without some sort of extenuating circumstances. Also, adults should not be funded by tax dollars. I understand feeding and caring for children, for they are innocent victims of circumstance. Adults should be working, if they cannot find work, they should be deported, unless the above mentioned extenuating circumstances. Tax dollars should not support them. Also there should be a zero tolerance for criminals, if caught doing something beyond being here illegally, they should definitely be deported. I have empathy, and I could be swayed on some of this maybe, but people just can't show up.
Women's Protections
Women should make the same wage as a man with comparable skill, experience, or education. Men cannot compete in women's athletics, or use women's spaces (bathrooms, showers, etc..).
As far as abortion, I believe in all the exceptions. I also believe in a woman's right to choice. But I am unclear on the time period. I guess, god is the true judge on that one.
As far as trans individuals go, we either need a third classification of spaces to provide comfort or they use biological spaces. And sports worse case go from Men and Women's to Men's, Women's, and All Sex.. or maybe be categorized by chromosomes.
Guns
I believe in the right to bear arms. But I believe in heavy background checks and restrictions, mandatory training or qualification, and limits on some types of weapons. Most folks don't need a .50 cal. (Note: I'm not a gun owner.)
Taxes
These days I believe in a flat tax across the board. Get rid of the IRS. Whether it's 15% or 25% whatever, every person and business entity pays the exact same percentage.
Foreign Affairs
Basically we should stay out of other peoples business, unless a direct threat to us. We should also actually keep our word in all treaties and promises with other countries.
Climate Change/Environment
I'm not 100% convinced global warming is the end of humanity. At the same time, I believe it does not hurt to try to be as gentle as possible on the planet and in the ways we use it. In the end, a conservation approach is good for us all. I also believe the biggest and fastest fix to the current environmental issues is a big push to regenerative agriculture and an end to factory farms. And no, cow farts aren't the problem.
So...
I skipped a few of the ones listed because they were sort of covered by another or I just didn't have a position on them. Now I will see how this blows up in my face. In a way it's a test of tolerance also. Can I have these opinions and not be attacked? I don't attack anyone myself. I try to keep my opinions to myself in most cases. But I felt I needed to vocalize a little, let people know where I stand.
