The largest of ships with the tiniest of rudders

I imagine myself as the largest of ships with the tiniest of rudders. At the helm of that ship is a captain I cannot directly control. That captain is my employee and in my charge. I say this because as any employee the captain is not perfect, and may steer you off course.

If you have ever managed employees you known how difficult it can be. The very success of the organization depends on the success of its employees. As a manager it is important to cultivate a culture, implement safeguards & training, provide feedback in an effort to incrementally move each employee towards the desired outcome.

It's your job to chart the course for your captain, and be ever vigilant to ensure that you get to the destination.

You have to ask yourself, are you setting your captain up for success?

What is the goal?

Have you ever been in an organization where there are announcements made by executive leadership but no actionable way to get there? Chart a course for your captain with attainable and reasonable goals along the way.

What culture are you creating?

Are you actively focusing on your goals? We should try to immerse ourselves in our goals. Change what you consume (books, audio books, podcasts, television, etc), write, or think to align with your goals.

What safeguards are you implementing?

Think through hazards that would prevent you from reaching your goals. Are there distractions? How are you ensure your success? The first line of defense should never be willpower or discipline. If it is, you will fail.

What is your training?

Think through what training you need to get to your goals, if you don't know find a mentor. If you think that you know enough, think through what else may be stopping you and train how to overcome that obstacle.

What is your feedback mechanism?

How is your plan evolving? Be sure to tweak your plan, safeguards, and training as needed. Be like water.

Like you, I am not perfect, this is my therapy, the culture that I am creating for myself.

With that said, help your captain, and ensure your boat is charted in the right direction.
